Belgian research project on humanitarian demining (HUDEM)

The Belgian project on humanitarian demining aims at helping the countries polluted by anti-personal (AP) mines by developing software and hardware modules which should contribute to solve this acute human problem, according to the UN requirements (reliability of 99.6 %). The project is articulated around four working groups. The first one is concerned with the sensor aspects of demining operations, the second one with the design of signal processing algorithms for data analysis and information fusion. The third one analyses and develops low cost robotic demining procedures and the last one deals with all the end-users aspects. This research project, initiated by the Belgian Ministry of Defense (MoD) and supported by the Belgian MoD and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is carried out in collaboration with laboratories of six Belgian universities (KUL, RUG, UCL, ULg, ULB, VUB) and is coordinated by the Royal Military Academy (RMA).
