Integrated Modular Unmanned Ground System 2

Project: OnderzoekEDF

Projectdetails

Doel van het project

iMUGS2 will build upon the foundations established by the European Defence Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP) iMUGS project. The initial iMUGS project responded to the EDIDP-MUGS-2019 call to develop unmanned ground combat systems and capabilities with evolving levels of autonomy. Successfully delivered in 2023, the project focused on creating innovative solutions to enable and enhance the use of robotic capabilities on the battlefield.
During the project, 13 entities from seven Member States (MS) developed an entirely new technological foundation for Unmanned Ground Systems (UGS). Key building blocks of the iMUGS project included a System-of-Systems (SoS) open architecture, system integration (single system), autonomous functions, cyber security, communication technologies, Command & Control, and interoperability across subsystems, technologies, and disciplines. Significant progress was made in collaborative behaviour, swarming, and homogeneous teaming capabilities.
iMUGS advanced these technologies towards practical applications, demonstrating autonomous mobility and non-lethal task capabilities. The project emphasized integrating existing technologies into a modular solution to support collaborative operational scenarios, fostering alignment of requirements and cross-border cooperation. This led to enhanced interoperability, economies of scale, reduced lifecycle costs, and increased security of supply. Additionally, the project addressed the ethical and legal aspects, as well as the acceptance of unmanned systems among the public and military personnel.
