In today’s globalised world, soldiers are deployed with increased frequency, duration, number of personnel, and demanding conditions. For example, in Eastern Europe, the raging war between Ukraine and Russia, increases the need of the presence of worldwide military service members to ensure peace, security, and future prospects. This raises the need to better understand the deployment process and its stages. An international deployment is typically described as a cycle subdivided into five stages: pre-deployment, deployment, sustainment, re-deployment, and post-deployment. At each stage of the deployment, employees are likely to face challenges that can affect their performance, motivation, and well-being. Therefore, it is crucial to study and document thoroughly each stage and its impact to ensure sustainable careers of resilient soldiers. While the challenges experienced during the first three stages (pre-deployment, deployment, and sustainment) and the resources at the individual, interpersonal, and organisational levels are well understood, the post-deployment stage has been neglected both in the literature and in organisational policies. Indeed, the study of the post-deployment stage, and more specifically of the reintegration process, remains fragmented, problem-focused, mono-domain and static. In other words, soldiers might have to cope on their own with the difficulties of coming home. This purpose of this study is to address these shortcomings by (1) providing an integrative social-ecological framework that identifies the three main dimensions (individual, interpersonal, and professional) and challenges of reintegration, (2) identifying the challenges that an organisation can face during the post-deployment stage and reintegration process, and (3) providing practical and theoretical implications for organisations to enable them to draft correctly and sufficiently post-deployment policies.Periode | 24 mei 2023 → 27 mei 2023 |
