The reintegration process of crisis service employees: a social—ecological perspective

Purpose: In today’s globalised world, international crisis services are deployed with increased frequency, duration, and number of personnel. Examples of such crisis services are the military, non-governmental organisations (NGO’s), and international police services. This increase in deployment raises the need to better understand the deployment process and its stages. Despite recent research efforts, the study of the post-deployment stage, more specifically the reintegration process, remains fragmented, problem-focused, mono-domain, and static. Hence, the purpose of this systematic review is to address these limitations by defining (a) how reintegration is conceptualised and measured in the existing literature, (b) what dimensions and concepts are associated with the reintegration process, (c) within what timeframe reintegration takes place, (d) and if we can identify different stages in the process.
Method: We followed the PRISMA protocol approach for systematic literature review and identified 5848 articles across several scientific databases published between 1995 and 2021. Based on pre-defined eligibility criteria, 103 articles were withheld for our review.
Results: We provide an integrative social-ecological framework that identifies three main dimensions of reintegration: individual, interpersonal, and professional. Our review suggests that the involvement of different dimensions, challenges, and outcomes can be simultaneous and that they can influence each other and the reintegration process. Even though research has primarily focused on descriptive studies of negative individual and interpersonal outcomes after deployment, employees can encounter paradoxical reintegration experiences with both positive and negative outcomes at the same time. Finally, we describe a reintegration process with different phases that take place during the post-deployment stage. Each phase is associated with new challenges.
