Rapid advancements in Virtual Reality (VR) technology open new dimensions and perspectives across various fields, with Sensory Neuroscience standing at a remarkable intersection. Understanding the mechanisms of virtual embodiment - the sensation of owning and controlling a virtual body that is perceived as one’s own, is vital as body ownership and the sense of agency are fundamental for any conscious experience. The primary focus of this research topic is to explore embodiment in immersive VR beyond commonly used subjective measures. We aim to focus on the neural and neurophysiological indices and correlates of embodiment, exploring how they change and adapt in a virtual environment. Further, we seek to investigate the higher-order effects of virtual embodiment on different cognitive, sensory, and motor processes, advancing our understanding of VR's broad implications on sensory neuroscience. Contributions welcomed to this research topic include, but are not limited to: • Investigate comprehensive measures of embodiment in immersive VR with a focus on its neural and neurophysiological indices. • Understand the implications of embodiment of a virtual body on cognitive, sensory, and motor processes. • Reveal VR's effect on sensory perception and its broader impact on neuroscience. • Present elaborate case studies delineating the implications of VR on body ownership, agency, sensory, and cognitive processes.
