Motivated military personnel whose values most closely match those of the organization remain a paramount asset for all armed forces. However, many countries currently face two major challenges: attracting applicants and retaining them in the long run.Assessing the Person-Organization fit (P-O fit) on values in a gamified environment could be a venue to tackle these problems. Serious Games (SGs) represent “a hybrid kind of recruitment and testing tools” that participate in employer branding among young people while improving the validity of selection measures.
In this project, we created a SG measuring P-O fit of applicants and potential applicants based on a Situational Judgment Test. The SG assesses and informs players about their personal values and their match with the Belgian Defence organizational values. This process could simultaneously improve auto-selection and detect applicants who are more likely to remain in the organization.
We carried out a front-end analysis and an iterative conception with heuristic evaluation and usability testing to qualitatively and quantitatively assess the end product. Results show that the SG has good properties in terms of user interface design and multi-dimensional user experience, which are key determinants of SGs development and use.
In the future, we will examine our SG’s impact on recruitment and selection at Belgian Defence using, respectively, an experimental and a longitudinal study. This work should open new perspectives for the development and implementation of SGs to meet the current challenges faced by armed forces in recruiting and selecting military personnel.
