Résumé

In a typical ground-penetrating radar (GPR) two-dimensional (2D) dataset, a great amount of data is collected, but only a small percentage of these data contains useful information about a buried target. This study presents a conceptually-based background subtraction (BS) method in the frequency domain to be applied in conjunction with phase-shift migration for the extraction of relevant information of the target. Experimental data have been collected using a stepped-frequency continuous-wave (SFCW) radar with a monostatic transverse electromagnetic (TEM) horn antenna used off-ground. Firstly, a recently developed antenna-subsurface-object model is used. The model is represented by linear systems in series and parallel and is based on the exact solution of the 3D Maxwell's equations. Based on this model, the effects of the antenna and soil are removed and the target signature is extracted. Subsequently, phase-shift migration is applied on denoised data for target response isolation. Background subtraction using the proposed model is compared with background subtraction by using the commonly used system identification (SI). Results show that the proposed background subtraction method in the frequency domain improves the quality of the migrated GPR 2D data.
