Biographie
I'm Microbiologist with more than 25 years’ experience in Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology. I received my Master of Science in 1992 from the University of Liège (ULg). Then I gained international experience through “Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)” and other international organizations and I worked on various aspects of tuberculosis (TB) diagnostics/treatment. In 2000, I joined the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM), Antwerp and specialised in Mycobacteriology research. My TB research activities have been conducted in 10 countries in Latin America (2 years working in Bolivia), in Africa (Kenya, Benin, Uganda, Ivory Coast, South Africa), in Asia (Indonesia, Vietnam, India) and in Europe including Eastern Europe (Armenia) and in Russia (9 months working in Siberia with MSF). Additionally I provided technical support to several TB endemic countries as an expert for WHO (to follow and implement the recommendations).
I obtained my PhD degree (2006) in Sciences from the laboratory of Microbiology at Gent University (UGent) in collaboration with the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM), and continued to work at ITM as Senior researcher until 2011. In 2012, I was appointed as a post-doc at UGent. In 2016, I joined the Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain, Brussels campus) at the Laboratory of Medical Microbiology (MBLG), as Operational Manager of the laboratory. Finally, in 2020 I joined Syngulon a synthetic biology startup developing genetic technologies using bacteriocins against pathogenic bacteria. During that time I was based at the Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc (Laboratory of Microbiology) Brussels where I worked with many bacteria pathogens. In April 2025, I joined the Belgian Defence at the Royal Military Academy (KMS-ERM) and the Queen Astrid Military Hospital (Brussels Belgium) as a Senior Researcher in Phage with the challenge to maximize the therapeutic potential of phages in the global fight against AMR.
