From Crashworthiness to Metal forming: Why Dynamic Mechanical Properties Matter

Activité: Conférence ou présentationPrésentation au cours d'un séminaire à caractère scientifique

Description

The dynamic behaviour of metals has been recognized since the late 19th century, when J. Hopkinson first identified that metals exhibit different mechanical responses at high strain rates compared to low strain rates. This phenomenon, known as strain rate sensitivity, influences the flow stress, ductility, and failure modes of metals under dynamic loading conditions. Understanding these effects is critical for industrial applications involving impact, crashworthiness, machining, and high-speed forming processes. This first presentation (out of two on this subject) will introduce you to industrial applications and examples where the knowledge of dynamic material behaviour is crucial. Those industrial examples range from automotive, aerospace to defence, mining and manufacturing.
