THE MATERIAL RESPONSE OF THIN ALUMINIUM PLATES UNDER NEAR SIMULTANEOUS TRIPLE IMPACTS: A FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contributionpeer-review

Abstract

The material response against multiple impacts is a newly found topic in the domain of dynamic mechanical analysis of materials that investigates the resistance to impacting fragments. Aluminium is a versatile metal with good dimensional stability and strength to weight ratio and is being used extensively as a structural component in many Defence and Aerospace applications. While its impact resistance against single impactors has been demonstrated, its behavior under near simultaneous multiple impacts hasn’t been investigated yet. The present paper analyses the mechanical behavior of thin AlMg6 aluminium plates under single and triple impacts using finite element simulations with the software LsDyna. The effects of impacting velocity and time interval between impacts are examined and the results are discussed.
