Abstract

A strong technological and experimental effort is being devoted to the preparation of multi-megajoule ICR heating experiments on a score of devices (PLT, TEXTOR, ASDEX, JET, DIII TORE SUPRA, etc. ), as well as to the continuation of the currently running experiments (PLT, TFR, TFT-2). To back up and guide these endeavours, a constant and broadly-based theoretical input is mandatory. This paper intends to put in perspective those theoretical actions which are presently going on and attempts to identify those areas where more effort seems to be needed.
