Abstract

The onset of nonclassical tearing modes (NTM) in the Joint European Torus tokamak device was demonstrated. It was shown that NTM could be easily destabilized by long-period sawteeth, obtained by sawtooth stabilization from ion-cyclotron heating or current drives. The concept is applicable to burning plasma scenarios, and destabilization of sawtooth resulted in shorter sawtooth periods and larger beta values without NTM.
