Project Details
Goal of the project
The project PEA aims to develop a novel propellant for small arms ammunition with advanced properties, namely with reduced gas temperature. This reduction of the gas temperature limits the mechanical erosion of the barrels and enables a doubling of their lifetime.
Role of the organisation
The Department of Chemistry has many years of experience in gun propellant engineering. The Department will be mainly involved in the thermodynamical prediction of the propellant performances, the experimental study of the stability and chemical compatibility.
Key findings
The propellants' improvements was achieved through a novel cold formulation using nitrogen additives that significantly dropped the combustion gas temperature.
Funding acknowledgement
This project has received funding from the Walloon Region (Belgium) under Grant Agreement 8420 - PEA.
