Project Details
Goal of the project
The purpose of this project is to study the use of a 5G installation in support of the "mission critical" networks of Belgian Defense bases. These networks are used to support operations and security, for logistical and technical support and as part of the emergency plans. It is therefore important for BEL Defense to analyze what type of 5G infrastructure meets our requirements in terms of information security (confidentiality, integrity and availability) and communication (integration with our existing networks, specific services, ....)
To make this project successful, the consortium is requesting both experimental development subsidies and also research infrastructure subsidies. The experimental development subsidy will be used to test and integrate the mission-critical solutions such as e.g. MCCPtX applications. The full cybersecurity and 5G blueprint assessment will also fall under experimental development.
Since Defense also has its own 5G frequencies, it seems appropriate for the Royal Military Academy and Defense to also invest in its own research infrastructure. The subsidy for research infrastructure will therefore be used to deploy 5G radio but also 5G core elements (NEF, UPF) locally so that further research can be linked to it (stress testing, security audit, etc.).

Role of the organisation
The RMA, as a research and academic institution, is active in the field of telecommunications (and 5G in particular). Some studies are already under way in this area and 5G is part of the courses taught in the polytechnic.
The Belgian Defence itself acts as operator of its networks and has the expertise in a wide range of communication systems (mobile and infrastructure). In the field of 5G, Defence is also active in the 5G working groups at NATO level.
