Project Details
Goal of the project
This research aims to determine how many Belgian military have died in operations abroad since 1945, to clarify the operational circumstances of their deaths and to see how public opinion and politicians responded to this loss of life. Since 1998 these military are commemorated every April 7th, receiving large media coverage. Nevertheless, we barely know whom we are commemorating every year on April 7th.
In 2022, the names of 252 men (not a single woman appears on the list) were called off during
a ceremony at the monument of the Unknown Soldier in Brussels.
