Behavior of laminated glass under the combined effect of fragment and blast impact: the development of a standardized test setup

Project: Research

Project Details

Goal of the project

The objective is to design and develop an experimental setup allowing to study the
mechanical behavior of materials and structures subjected to a combined loading of a
blast wave and the impact of fragments. The setup should allow the user to define as
many characteristics of the combined loading as possible; i.e. the planarity, the pressure
and the impulse of the blast wave, the velocity and the impact positions of the fragments
on the target, and the relative arrival time between both loads. The setup will be
complemented with guidelines for a standardized test procedure, allowing to assess the
protection level of a structure or material, e.g. laminated glass, under a more realistic
loading scenario.
Assess the reliability of the protection level of the laminated glass obtained from
considering the blast loading only or the impact of fragments only or the independent
consecutive loading by both loads with respect to the combined/simultaneous loading.
