Goal of the project

The standoff detection and neutralization of explosive ordnance (UXO/IED) including radio controlled IED and person and vehicle borne improvised explosive device, is still an important research topic, requiring complex information fusion from various sensors and effectors.

The solution proposed by GENIUS consortium to the topic EDF-2023-RA-PROTMOB-DEXPLO is based on the experience of other demining and IED detection projects, the knowledge from tactical cloud infrastructures, the lessons learnt from multiple sensor data acquisition and fusion projects. Specifically, is based on the previous experience of three of the winning projects of the EDF-22 Challenge (DIGIT-R-HTP-P /O): CONVOY, AIDEDex and HITDOC projects, as GENIUS members are part of them.

These three projects will be the starting point of the new GENIUS proposal, where the accuracy of UXO/IED explosive detections, the inclusion of new technologies and new sensors for detection, the inclusion of a new set of effectors, including a UGV for neutralisation and handling, will significantly improve IED and UXO mine counter technologies to deal with new and evolving threats.

GENIUS proposal considers an evaluation campaign in a relevant environment, to demonstrate the capabilities achieved by the developed system, where all the data acquired through their sensors, will be available to enable reproduction of experiments in a simulated environment.
