    Personal profile

    Biography

Bogdan Știrbu is a senior researcher in internal ballistics specialising in the modelling and experimental validation of propellant-driven weapon systems. He conducts advanced research at the Royal Military Academy in Brussels, with a focus on the physical modelling and performance analysis of small- and medium-calibre weapons.

His expertise covers the full internal ballistic cycle, including propellant ignition and combustion, gas expansion, projectile dynamics, and energy dissipation within the barrel. His research places particular emphasis on the reconstruction of internal ballistic states—such as gas temperature, pressure evolution, and projectile velocity—from indirect measurements, and on the development of physically consistent models that extend beyond classical ideal-gas and lumped-parameter approaches.

His work integrates analytical modelling, CFD-based simulations, and experimentally instrumented firing tests supported by high-frequency pressure measurements and Doppler-based velocity diagnostics. His scientific results have been disseminated through peer-reviewed publications and international conferences, notably in studies linking chamber pressure measurements to the estimation of gas temperature and projectile velocity.

Bogdan Știrbu’s research is characterised by methodological rigour, strong experimental–numerical coupling, and a systematic approach to internal ballistic modelling.
