Description
In this project, a consortium composed of the Dutch, Swedish, Finnish and Belgian Defences, as well as the Dutch Police Academy, are collaborating on the subject of serious games for personnel selection in high-risk professions. This project is an “EDA Ad Hoc R&T” Cat B project (project N° B.PRJ.RT.925).The main objective of the SEGARES project is to develop a Serious Game (named Space Evac) to assess some critical competences of military personnel (i.e., level of adaptability, situational awareness, cognitive flexibility, coping flexibility) in complex situations. This Serious Game is designed to assess candidates' resistance to critical situations. In Space Evac, the candidate is immersed in a series of scenarios taking place on board of a space station of which he/she is the Captain. He/she must then make decisions to evacuate and bring back the ship's passengers safely.
The SEGARES project will lead to the following scientific and practical outputs: a review of the literature on critical competences for selection and on the use of serious games as a selection tool, the conceptualization and development of the Space Evac prototype, and a pilot study of the game. Finally, the project should lead to other scientific publications, as well as to another project, SEGARES II, in continuity with this line of research.
The RMA contributes directly to this project by providing regular inputs such as ideas and insights, sharing experience and expertise, conducting literature research, and participating in the planning, collection and analysis of data collected from a sample of the school's students. The RMA is also actively involved in consortium meetings, which are held monthly online, and twice a year in person. Finally, for the latter, RMA occasionally organizes and hosts the consortium on its premises.
