Description
Rising geopolitical tensions in a globalized and interdependent world have renewed attention to the concepts of economic statecraft, geoeconomics, and economic security, which policy makers now use more frequently. Their meaning and the differences between them are, however, not always clear. The article clarifies the terms by examining how they are defined and how they differ. In the first section, we map the existing conceptual debate on the three topics and in the second section we evaluate the use in the wider literature through a systematic literature review of definitions in peer-reviewed articles. We evaluate these definitions based on their essential properties, in line with the conceptual debates. Based on the findings, we bring the two sections together and propose three definitions that reflect their use and respect the boundaries between them, while also explaining how they are linked. The analysis complements earlier conceptual work by improving the clarity and demonstrating their usefulness. The clarifications help advance both the academic and policy debates around economic interdependence by improving communication and offering clear concepts for empirical and theoretical analysis.| Period | 27 Aug 2025 |
