Using Serious Games to Improve Efficiency in the Recruitment ProcessAdditional Description
Like many armed forces worldwide, Belgian Defence (BD) faces recruitment challenges. As the demand for military personnel rises, the number of applicants struggles to meet this growing need, occasionally even leaving positions unfilled. In light of this situation, it is crucial to improve the efficiency of the recruitment process. In this respect, serious games (SGs) could represent an interesting marketing tool since they effectively attract large pools of candidates while enhancing the employer brand (EB) and attractiveness (Chow & Chapman, 2013). Moreover, integrating SGs into recruitment processes enables organizations to project a more innovative and attractive image, particularly among young job seekers (Joy, 2017).
In this study, a SG was developed in which players are immersed in the life of a young candidate starting their career at BD. Participants (potential future applicants) were subsequently invited to play the game as part of an online pre-post study design.
Belgian Defence EB and its various components (Lievens, 2007), as well as BD attractiveness as an employer, were measured before and after the game. Preliminary results regarding the impact of the SG on these measures will be discussed, considering potential moderating variables such as gaming experience or familiarity with BD.
This work investigates the potential for using SGs to tackle a challenge that arises at the earliest stages of the military life cycle, namely recruiting large numbers of young and motivated candidates to meet the increasing demand for military personnel.
