Abstract

During a deployment, commanders need a valid tool to measure the history of professional commitment
within the troops. Our study attempts to identify the resources of professional commitment in the operational context and to
how to measure them. In a first sample, 1,690 deployed military personnel took part in a survey comprising 67
items assessing different operational aspects. An exploratory analysis identified 14 potential resources. In a second
sample, 410 deployed participants completed the same questionnaire as well as the Utrecht Professional Commitment Scale.
A principal components analysis confirmed 11 of the 14 potential resources. All are strongly associated with professional commitment
and can therefore be considered as resources for external operations. This study proposes an
Operational Military Resource Inventory (OMRI): its results provide commanders with a measure of 11 important antecedents of professional commitment during an operation.
of professional commitment during an external operation.
