    Abstract

An extensively instrumented small-scale drop weight set-up is used to investigate the mechanical response of laminated glass samples to impact loading for different parameters such as interlayer adhesions, stiffness and impact energy. High speed images of the impact are an essential part in the data processing, providing information about time of breakage of both plies. Photographs of breakage patterns are quantified via a breakage number. The influence of interlayer adhesion level and thickness is rather small; the impact force histories show little deviation. Higher impact velocities lead to a higher initial stiffness of the laminate, but also to an earlier breakage albeit at a higher force. A relationship between impact velocity and energy absorbed by the interlayer is established. Making strong conclusions is made difficult due to the large scatter on results, which is inherent to the glass material and which is apparently not subdued by laminating it.
