Abstract

This study presents initial results from an updated shooting simulator at the Royal Military Academy (RMA), Brussels, designed to evaluate laser dazzling effects on shooting performance. In this updated setup, the simulator incorporates a centrally emitted laser beam, flexible target positioning, and timed targets with auditory cues to enforce rapid decisionmaking. The planned campaign will expose trained shooters to controlled dazzling conditions using a 532 nm green laser, with performance metrics (hit scores and response times) recorded alongside physiological data from eye-tracking glasses and electroencephalography headbands. Here we report feasibility data from a pilot run, which provide insights into visual fixation, gaze shifts, and cognitive responses under dazzling conditions. These feasibility data support the planned larger trial with 30+ participants.
