Abstract

The small Uncrewed Aircraft System, or drone, is increasingly being used with malicious intent or accidentally in a wide range of scenarios. If the threat requires a hard kill solution, the discussion may rapidly converge to fragmentation warheads, which limit the need for excessive precision. By implementing a muzzle velocity measurement and fuze time delay setting during firing for medium caliber ammunitions, the conceptual principles of Air Burst Munitions are set, making these a great candidate as countermeasure. The present work discusses the design of a simulation tool to assess Air Burst Munitions against small drones by primarily defining the threat, characterizing the ammunition, modeling the ballistic trajectory, investigating the behavior on impact and assessing the hit probability, given a scenario. The objective of the tool is to optimize firing occasions, number of fired projectiles, projectile delivery positions and detonation timings.
